2017 Honda Clarity FCV Review

Smog greets visitors of Los Angeles as soon as they step off an airplane, much like Hawaiian guests are greeted with a lei. The beautiful mountains are blanketed by the foggy haze of pollution, a result of the many cars, trucks and other vehicles burning gasoline in traffic or on the move.

The solutions that are in place are easy to wrap your head around when viewed in the grand scope of things. By minimizing our reliance on fossil fuels, we can slowly restore the air quality and maybe get an unfiltered view of the horizon in places like Los Angeles.

Offering environmentally conscious consumers vehicles that use no gasoline is one way automakers are trying to help the situation. Electric vehicles have gained popularity with people who hate pumping gas and enjoy the silent thrill of electron propulsion. However, electric cars feature huge batteries, which are capable of being recharged anywhere there’s an electric outlet, but take a long time to reach their full capacity.

Another alternative fuel that’s seen as a potential savior of our blue skies is hydrogen. Cars fueled by hydrogen use quiet and clean electric motors to move around, but a hydrogen-powered vehicle is much quicker to refuel than recharging a battery. It can take just three to five minutes to refill a tank, and when you do, you get an EV-beating range of over 300 miles (482 km). Honda has been offering these hydrogen-fueled cars for over 10 years now, in very limited and niche markets, but is looking to expand the availability and appeal with a new vehicle called the Clarity FCV.

Hold Up. Is this the Honda ZSX?
Mar 09, 2017 - 1:36 PM - by AutoGuide.com

We just got our hands on pictures of a mystery Honda being unloaded from a transport truck in California. Although it’s clearly a concept—production cars in our experience come with roofs—it looks an awful lot like something that might eventually become the Honda ZSX, sometimes known as the baby NSX.

First and foremost, this just looks like a little NSX. The pointy features and the aerodynamism are all pure NSX. The tiny frontal area also suggests that this is a mid-engine car.

Then there’s the more circumstantial evidence of its location. Our spy photographer found this concept hanging around California, which a quick look at my Atlas tells me is in America. The very same America where the NSX was developed. The same America whose Honda office is reportedly advocating for a small sports car project.

So if we accept that Honda is looking to build a baby NSX—and a trademark application suggests they are—Ohio, where the not-baby-NSX was developed, would be a perfect place to start. Especially if you consider that its probable engine, the 2.0-liter I4 that propels the Civic Type-R also comes from Ohio.

All very exciting to be sure, but there are a few details that cast some doubt onto this all. Details like the Honda

Production Honda Civic Type R Finally Debuts With 306 HP

Compact sports car fans, the time is finally here for you to go nuts over the brand new Honda Civic Type R, which will finally be making its way to North America with 306 horsepower.

Based on the new 10th-generation Civic, Honda is calling this the most powerful, quickest, fastest and most agile version of its compact car ever, and the production model has just debuted at the Geneva Motor Show looking just like the prototype.

Under the hood, you’ll find a turbocharged and direct injection 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that makes 306 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. That power is sent to the front wheels thanks to a short-throw six-speed manual transmission that also features automatic rev matching for quick and smooth downshifting. Compared to the last-generation European Type R, the new model also features a lower final drive ratio for better throttle response and a new single-mass flywheel that will reduce reduces clutch inertia.

There’s also a completely redone suspension setup that’s designed to reduce torque steer and improve at-the-limit handling. That’s done with a new four-wheel adaptive suspension system that is sure to be awesome on the road. The car also features an adaptive and variable ratio electric power steering system as well as a helical limited-slip front differential.

At each corner, high-performance Continental ContiSportContact 6 tires are mounted on sexy 20-inch aluminum alloy wheels, and behind those are four-piston Brembo brakes and big cross-drilled rotors up front.

The chassis has also undergone several enhancements, becoming more rigid and responsive thanks to the application of structural adhesive throughout the body. The car also features an aluminum hood, helping this compact weigh less than the normal Honda Civic Hatchback.

Drivers will love the three different drive modes — with the default setting being Sport, an additional track-focused +R setting is also available alongside a tamer comfort mode. These modes adjust the steering response, throttle response, transmission rev-matching, stability control and adjust those fancy adaptive dampers.

Inside the cabin, you’ll find aggressively bolstered seats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift boot, aluminum shift knob and pedals, as well as a red Type R meter and serialized Type R plate on the center console. The car comes in a single trim and features a seven-inch touchscreen with navigation as well as both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support. The sound system also sounds pretty powerful with 540-watts of output through 12 speakers.

Honda reassures that the Civic Type R will have a mid-$30,000 price range and reminds us that the engine is made in Anna, Ohio, engine plant, while the car is manufactured in Swindon, England. We just can’t wait any longer to see this thing on the roads in the North America, so it’s a good thing that it goes on sale over here in late Spring.
